Selecting a Servo Motor Gearbox

There are many things to keep in mind when selecting a servo motor gearbox. You should start by knowing the maximum dynamic peak torque of the motor. If you assume the maximum torque will be transmitted to the gearbox, you will end up oversizing and wasting money. Furthermore, a large portion of the motor’s peak acceleration torque is not actually transmitted through the gearbox; rather, it is consumed by the rotor.

A conventional gearbox is typically not very accurate, as up to half of the peak torque is expended in accelerating the rotor and the load. In a servo motor gearbox, the load will be equal to or less than half of the gearbox’s torque rating. You can also determine the amount of backlash by calculating k=motor inertia/load inertia.

Another thing to consider is the frequency of load cycles. Many positioning and motion control applications involve repeated acceleration and deceleration cycles. Additionally, many of these cycles have frequent starts/stops and direction reversals. These cycles create what is known as a “load characteristic cycle.” This cycle can be difficult to predict, but it can be measured and statistically generated for a given servomotor. Then, you’ll be able to make an informed decision about which servo motor gearbox you should buy.

A servo motor gearbox can greatly improve the speed-torque characteristics of a servo motor. For example, planetary gearboxes are a good choice for applications requiring high input speeds. These gearboxes can offer a 10:1 speed reduction, and some high-speed designs can have up to 100:1 ratios. And that’s not all. You can even select a planetary gearbox if you’re worried about noise.

Lastly, a servo motor gearbox has a wide range of possibilities for use. The worm gear is one such type, and it is made up of a spiral threaded shaft and toothed wheel. This type of gear can be used to make high-precision applications possible, thereby eliminating the need for mechanical components. In addition to worm gearing, it involves friction and rotation of the worm wheel in an oil bath. However, the worm gearing mechanism suffers from losses due to sliding friction. However, some manufacturers have managed to minimize these losses over the years.

There are two primary ways to estimate the maximum torque of a servo motor gearbox. One method is to measure the torque through the gearhead. A second method uses the friction torque, which is related to the peak torque of the motor. Both methods are effective, but only one is better for continuous duty applications. These methods have their limitations.

Lastly, a servo motor gearbox has three layers. The first one, called the velocity loop, works with a voltage proportional to velocity. If the velocity falls below a certain level, it sends a command to the current loop to increase the current. The third, the position loop, accepts the command from the motion controller or PLC. In this way, the three loops operate in harmony, providing smooth motion for the servo mechanism.

Jointing with reducer in case of jointing a reducer with the device, make sure that the combining side is plane without inconsistency, and when assembling reducer onto equipment, ensuring assembly surface smooth.

Connection to the output shaft

When assembling a coupling, pulley, etc. onto the output shaft, make sure that excessive axial load not be given to the output shaft.

In case of strongly hitting the shaft with a hammer, the shaft, make sure that excessive axial may be damaged, therefore it shall be prohibited.

If the shaft or key of a coupling assembled is loosed, it may cause carbonization, so be careful when assembling.

For assembling a coupling, fix the key with a set bolt.

Please adjust the shaft center carefully in connecting.
